My chasen arrived with lots of splinters. This is my first shin chasen and for how much it was, very disappointed to see so many splinters. And it continues to splinter with each use. I always soak it before using.

As each chasen is handmade from natural bamboo, some variation between individual pieces is unavoidable. Bamboo is a natural material, and minor splintering or fraying can occur during use even when the chasen is properly soaked beforehand. Unfortunately, this is not something that can be completely eliminated with a natural bamboo product.
That said, we understand that the amount of splintering you experienced was more than you expected, particularly considering the price of the chasen, and we are sorry that the product did not meet your expectations.
