A matcha bowl finished in a deep, luminous blue glaze, made in Gifu by a kiln working in the Mino tradition. The still, dark surface sets off the green of whisked matcha in a way few glazes manage, which is the whole point of a bowl like this.

Design: The blue kinyō glaze pools and breaks across the body, shifting from near-black at the rim to a bright mottled blue where it gathers. No two bowls are identical. The interior carries the same depth, so the matcha sits against colour rather than against white.

Material: Porcelain, glazed inside and out with an unglazed foot ring. Smooth to the hand and substantial enough to stay steady while you whisk.

  • Capacity: 500 ml (16.9 fl oz)
  • Weight: 520 g

About Mino Ware: Mino ware (Mino-yaki) comes from Gifu Prefecture and carries more than 1,300 years of history. It is the largest pottery-producing region in Japan and the tradition behind many of the forms used in tea.

About Seian Kiln: Founded in 1963, Seian Kiln (Ichiyama Co., Ltd.) works in Gifu at the centre of the Mino ware region. The kiln makes everything from craftsman-finished pieces to everyday tableware, keeping to the tradition while continuing to develop it.

All dimensions are approximate. Colours may vary slightly depending on photographic lighting and monitor settings.
